The way to start the life of a black hole is to end the life of a star. The center of the star runs out of fuel and fusion stops. Gravity begins to take over and crushes the center of the stars. Only when a giant star collapses is when it has enough matter to condense into a black hole. The black hole is born through distruction and continues to create destruction throughout its life time. The only stars that are capable of creating a black hole are giant stars because they have enough matter to condense into a singularity. The star can either lose its fuel or create iron at its center to be able to start the black holes way into life. There is no evidence that shows how or even if black holes have an end to their lives. For now they are seen as immortal.
